Boston Legal, A Delayed Discovery Many times I only discover the value of a television series after it is over. Being as I watch very little TV, I’m most likely to catch a repeat episode or two late on Sunday evening out of some kind of weird Sunday night boredom. And, it was out of that Sunday night lull that I discovered Boston Legal. The series had already ended. I was somewhat disgusted with the lechery of Denny Crane and Allen Shore, but also intrigued by their 5 minutes on the balcony when I could get some small hint into their vulnerabilities. This all made me wonder, what on earth made these two “nuts” tick? With this in mind, I decided to go back to the very beginning and order the entire series on Netflix. Now, months later, I am almost to the end of the series and, to my surprise, I’ve discovered that I really like these two intelligent, passionate, disgusting, flawed, and… vulnerable characters. Truly, they are real. All the good, bad and ugly about them has come out. It’s made them actually loveable. They are eccentric. And, it bears repeating, REAL. None of us are perfect, and, most of us try so very hard to hide that, the very thing that makes us human. Denny Crane and Allen Shore show their humanity and also their lack there of. A suggestion, order up the series and watch it. Yell, at them, get aggravated with them, hate them…. Then tolerate them, laugh at them, and finally…… love them. In doing so, you will also be able to find a little more love for the “nuts” in your life and a little more compassion for yourself. .
